How to Draw the Walrus from The Baseball Player and the Walrus

by Ben Loory & Alex Latimer

We asked author Ben Loory and illustrator Alex Latimer to give us the inside scoop on their new book The Baseball Player and the Walrus. Here’s what they told us … and showed us.

Ben answers the question: Why a walrus?

Walruses have always made me really happy because they look to me like people trapped in sleeping bags who can’t get out — sort of squirming around on the beach saying, “Wait for me! I’m trapped in a sleeping bag! Help!” And then those noises they make, and the tusks, and the mustache — they’re just the strangest, cutest creatures, and my heart always goes out to them.

When I was writing the book, I started with the baseball player. I knew he was sad and looking for something, but I didn’t yet know what it was. He and I were in the same boat! Then I had him go to the zoo because that’s where I go when I’m sad, and then I just went from animal to animal in my mind, as he went from animal to animal in the zoo, and when he got to the walrus, all this joy rose up inside me! And I knew I’d found the baseball player’s friend and my book.

Alex shows us how to draw the walrus!
