How Books Can Help With Bedtime Challenges
by the Brightly Editors
Bedtime can be challenging enough without the myriad of distractions! From too much screen time to your child not being tired enough to sleep, there are endless obstacles when it comes to getting your little ones to bed on time. Luckily, for some of these roadblocks, books can help!
-
TIP #1: Screen Time Before Bed
-
Set a timer that signals the end of screen time and switch from screens to books at least an hour before bed. If the whole family does it, it helps make it less of a task and more of a fun nighttime routine. In this day and age, we’re surrounded by screens all day long, so this makes books seem more like a fun treat.
-
TIP #2: Overtired or Not Tired Enough
-
If they’re overtired, try a soothing book; if they’re not tired enough, try a participatory book that helps them get out the day’s energy. Books with calming, rhythmic text will help lull your little ones to sleep, while books that encourage activity — like lift-the-flap or counting stories — will get them ready for bed without forcing them to try and sleep just yet.
-
TIP #3: They Can't Sleep Unless You're There
-
Audiobooks offer comforting sounds that your children can listen to as they drift off. The audio recording will make them feel like they’re not alone, while the story will help them escape to dreamland. Just make sure there’s a nightlight if your child is afraid of the dark!
