The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything is a must-read at Halloween. There’s no question that kids love the stomping, nodding, and wiggling actions in the book. And they’ll love getting creative with this pumpkin scarecrow craft too.

What You’ll Need:

  • Cardboard measuring approximately 4 x 4 inches (cereal boxes work great)
  • Craft or popsicle sticks
  • Orange paint
  • Raffia (for hair)
  • Craft foam or felt
  • Wiggle eyes
  • Black marker
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Paintbrush

How to Make Your Scarecrow:

Step 1: Glue the craft (or popsicle) sticks onto the cardboard, staggering them so the bottom mimics the shape of a pumpkin.

Step 2: Paint your craft sticks orange and let them dry.  This will only take a couple of minutes if you are using craft paint or acrylic paint.

Step 3: Glue strands of raffia along the top of the craft sticks. Make it messy to add personality to your scarecrow.

Step 4: Cut out your scarecrow’s hat from craft foam or felt. I made a top hat like the one in the book and added an orange band, but you can make any style you want.

Step 5: Glue the hat to the top of the scarecrow’s face, with the raffia poking out from underneath the brim. You may need to weigh down the hat for a few minutes so it stays in place.

Step 6: Now it’s time for the face. Glue on the wiggle eyes or draw some on with a black marker. Draw your scarecrow’s mouth and nose on as well.

Step 7: Glue a craft stick to the bottom of the scarecrow and let everything dry.

All done!
