Terrific Tales of Pirates, Cowboys, and Adventurers
by Janssen Bradshaw
Sometimes, you need a quiet book. One to read to a droopy-eyed child just before you tuck them into bed. Other times, nothing but high adventure will do! If your bookshelf is in need of excitement — in the form of swashbuckling pirates or brave cowboys — look no further than these eight books.

Let's Sing a Lullaby with the Brave Cowboy
This is one of my all-time favorite picture books. The ironically named Brave Cowboy is camped out for the night with his cows. He grows frightened by one harmless item after another, but his cows are able to keep him calm — that is, until a wolf appears. My girls could listen to this book for hours, and I’m happy to read it again and again.

Cindy Ellen: A Wild Western Cinderella
This hysterical retelling of the fairy tale classic has Cindy Ellen showing up at the rodeo (instead of the ball), where she manages to lasso the heart of Joe Prince.
-
Cowboy Camp
Avery doesn’t fit in at cowboy camp. He’s allergic to horses and hates the food. But his moment to shine comes when a bully shows up.
-
Pirate Pete
Like most pirates, Pirate Pete loves gold. And there are so many places to find it! But at every new location, his plans are foiled. The illustrations in this book are particularly fun; you'll love seeing Pete explore one island after another.

How I Became a Pirate
If your child dreams of sailing the seven seas with a hook and an eye patch, this is the book for them! Being a pirate is fun, what with all the bad table manners and gold doubloons. But when bedtime rolls around, and there's no bedtime story in sight, Jeremy Jacob realizes being a pirate isn't all it’s cracked up to be.

Doors in the Air
Every door has a new adventure waiting behind it, especially if those doors are the ones inside your imagination. This rhyming book is delightful and will inspire your kids to make up their own scenarios about what might be behind their own “doors in the air,” long after the book is finished.

The Secret Shortcut
After arriving late to school day after day (by no fault of their own, of course; it’s those pesky pirates and aliens that are to blame!), Wendell and Floyd decide to try a shortcut. That leads to some problems and the results are hilarious. Perfect for readers that love an over-the-top book.
