Never-Before-Published Dr. Seuss Sketch Inspires New Book: Gertrude Gish on a Dish on a Fish

by the Brightly Editors

Dr. Seuss’s fun and whimsical art has captured the hearts of generations of young readers, sparking imaginations and a love for creative stories. Keeping this tradition alive, the people behind Dr. Seuss’s books launched Seuss Studios. Their goal is to continue Dr. Seuss’s legacy of inspiring children to develop a love for reading.

Gertrude Gish on a Dish on a Fish by Sarah Hwang is the second book in a new line of Beginner Books by Seuss Studios in which up-and-coming authors and illustrators create original books inspired by Dr. Seuss’s unpublished sketches and illustrations.

With rhyming text and sweet, funny illustrations, this new story celebrates individuality and using our unique talents for the greater good.

Gertrude Gish stacks things here…there…and everywhere. She stacks her brother’s drumstick dinner, she stacks books at school, and when a parade comes to her town, she stacks the whole parade! Everyone in town has had enough of Gertrude’s quirky pastime. But when the mayor’s penguins are stuck in a tree and Gertrude comes to the rescue, will her heroic deed make people see her (and her unique skill) in a different light?

Each book in the Seuss Studios program features the Dr. Seuss sketch that inspired the book and a letter from the creator explaining what drew them to the project and their process.

“I’m so excited to share Gertrude Gish with the world and continue Dr. Seuss’s legacy through this book. I feel very honored to have been a part of this project, and I hope my readers have as much fun reading Gertrude Gish as I had making it!” shares author Sarah Hwang.

Gertrude Gish on a Dish on a Fish! follows Hello, Sun! and will be available on May 6, 2025.
